Silicone sealants are used especially for DIY jobs. Most people buy silicone sealant from the local DIY store and also they purchase the silicone sealant which is available for the cheap price. In reality, different types of clear waterproof sealant are used based on the type and nature of the work. Each type of silicone sealant has different resistance, durability and flexibility. In this article let us discuss some tips for selecting the right silicone sealant based on the work type.
Silicone sealant is mainly differentiated based on the type of work for which it is used. Some of the common uses of clear waterproof sealant are gluing of aquariums, making flexible and reusable moulds, making rubber goods in many shapes, used to repair rubber trim on vehicle, used to seal downpipes and gutters, used to fix glass or mirror on the tile surface, and used for sealing the gap around worktops, windows, showers and baths.
Silicone sealants are also used in building applications because of strong properties. Some of the characteristics of silicone sealant which made it suitable for building applications are high movement capability, it is flexible after years, resistant to temperature, resistant to UV and they can last for long period.
Silicone sealants have a strong odor and it takes time to cure. Silicone sealants are used for glass structure is one of the main advantages. You cannot paint a pure silicone sealant. At extreme temperatures, the silicone sealant will be flexible. It is waterproof and can be applied on any surface. They are resistant to bacteria and also prevent the growth of mildew.
Some of the silicone sealant type used for industrial needs are acetoxy cure, neutral care, low modulus and high modulus. If you want a rigid structure then you can choose high modulus. If you like to stretch it with the low force and if you need better movement and elasticity then it is better to select low modulus. The main thing to be considered while selecting the silicone sealant type is its movement.
Different types of clear waterproof sealant:
Low modulus can be stretched to a certain extent but it cannot be used as a hardwearing. Low modulus is used for perimeter seal, for sealing glass walls, curtain walling, glazing of windows and sealing powder-coated polyester frame. They can be used for accommodating movement and are best for adhesion. Low modulus silicone sealants can last for a long period when compared with other sealant types.
High modulus silicone sealant cannot be stretched but they are hardwearing. Some of the applications of high modulus silicone sealant are kitchen countertops, showcases, joining glass, shop fronts, sanitary application, washbasin, sink, shower and baths.
Acetoxy silicone sealant:
When it cures they release acetic acid. The smell of acetic acid is similar to vinegar. They are rigid and also takes very less time to cure. They do not have better adhesion and are used for polycarbonate, aluminum, plastic and glass. For glazed tile and glass, you can use acid cure sealant.
